Professional and social activities

Born on September 13, 1976 in the village of Subotiv Chyhyryn district of Cherkasy region. Since 1998, he worked as a teacher of history and law at the Subotiv secondary school of I-III levels in the Chyhyryn district of the Cherkasy region. In 2001-2007 – Lecturer, Associate Professor of the Department of History of Ukraine at the Cherkasy State Technological University, since 2013 – Professor of this Department. In 2007-2012 – Associate Professor of the Department of Social Disciplines and Law of the Cherkasy State Technological University. Since 2012 – Professor of the Department of  History and Law of the Cherkasy State Technological University.

2003-2004 – Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Management of the Cherkasy State Technological University, from 2005 to 2014. – assistant to the rector for humanitarian education and upbringing. Since 2014 – Vice-Rector for Humanitarian and Educational Issues of the Cherkasy State Technological University.

Deputy Chairman of the Board of the Cherkasy Regional Organization of the National Union of Local Lore Researchers of Ukraine (from 2003 to 2021), Deputy Chairman of the Council of the Scientific Society of Agrarian Historians of Cherkasy (since 2003), member of the Cherkasy Regional Branch of the All-Ukrainian Foundation for the Reproduction of Sights of Historical and Architectural Heritage named after Honchar (since 2002), a member of the Cherkasy Regional Competition Commission for the award of the annual Regional Local Lore Prize named after Mykhailo Maksymovych (since 2006), a member of the Board of the Cherkasy Regional Organization of the Red Cross Society (since 2005), a member of the Center for the Scientific Society. T. Shevchenko in Cherkasy (since 2005), member of the Ukrainian Society of Historians of Science (since 2007), member of the Expert Council of the Cherkasy Regional Center for Ecological and Naturalistic Creativity “Minor Academy of Sciences of Ukraine” for students (since 2008).

On December 22, 2021, at the VI reporting and election conference of the Cherkasy regional organization of the National Union of Local Lore Researchers of Ukraine, Valentyn Lazurenko was elected chairman of the Cherkasy regional organization of the National Union of Local Lore Researchers of Ukraine.

Scientific interests and work

Valentyn Lazurenko was one of the first in Ukrainian historical science (since 1999) who began to investigate the problem of peasant wealth in the Ukrainian village in the era of the new economic policy (1921-1929). Author of a number of monographs on the aforementioned problem: “The Prosperous Peasantry of Ukraine in the Conditions of the New Economic Policy” (2003), “Village. Bread. Money. The tax policy of the Soviet government in the Ukrainian village during the NEP” (2004), “Kulya or the owner? Peasant economy as a social category” (2005), “Ukrainian farmer during the NEP” (2011), “Ukrainian farming: rise and fall (1921-1929)” (2013).

In 2004, he founded the publication of a series of popular science books “The Library of Historical Memory” SOURCES OF ETERNITY “”. The purpose of the series is to promote the education of young people, modern Ukrainians in the moral and cultural national spirit of Ukrainians. To date, the following books of the series mentioned above have seen the light of day: “The Wisdom Given to Ages” (2004), “Caravans of the Ukrainian Steppe” (co-author, 2004), “From Generation to Generation. Social Life and Life of the Ukrainian Peasantry in the Second Half of the 19th Century” (co-author, 2004), “At the Crossroads of Epochs. Bohdan Khmelnytskyi and his day” (co-author, 2005), “Agricultural work. Creation, improvement and use of agricultural equipment by the Ukrainian peasantry” (co-author, 2007), “Heritage of the clan. Surnames of the inhabitants of Cherkasy region in the names of settlements, states, rivers, seas, nationalities” (co-author, 2011), “In search of the crypt of the great state of Ukraine Bohdan Khmelnytskyi. The funeral of Hetman of Ukraine Bohdan Khmelnytskyi in the Illinska Church in the village of Subotiv: from centuries of research, legends and myths to modern scientific hypotheses (2019).

In 2006, Valentyn Lazurenko, together with like-minded people (Nadiia Kuksa, Oksana Minska), began holding student historical and local history conferences “Chyhyryn Region in the history of Ukraine” in the Chyhyryn district of the Cherkasy region. With these conferences, Professor Valentyn Lazurenko launched a local history and educational patriotic movement that is relevant for today’s school, the form of which is the holding of historical and local history student conferences, with the involvement of scientists from higher educational institutions of the Cherkasy region and museum and library workers. Nine conferences on the issue of printed collections of works have already been held.

In 2018, together with like-minded people (historians, local historians, museologists), he began holding the annual All-Ukrainian scientific and practical conference (with international participation) “Cultural and historical heritage of Ukraine: research prospects and preservation traditions” at the Cherkasy State Technological University.

Author of the first in the history of the Cherkasy regional local history textbook “History of the Chyhyryn region (from ancient times to the present)” (2004).

In 2014, he created the Center for National Patriotic Dignity at the Cherkasy State Technological University. In 2017, he began holding the Regional Festival-Competition of Youth Creativity “Wings” on the basis of the Chess State Technical University.

Prepared as a scientific consultant one doctor of historical sciences and as a supervisor – eight candidates of historical sciences. Considerable attention is paid to the dissemination of knowledge about the history of the Cherkasy region and the history of Ukraine as a whole. He constantly appears on the pages of the all-Ukrainian and regional press, participates in thematic programs on radio and television. Participant of regional, all-Ukrainian, international scientific conferences, symposiums, historical readings.

Valentyn Lazurenko’s scientific publications and his speeches in the mass media cover various aspects of the history of Ukraine, raise topical problems of patriotic education and the formation of the national consciousness of citizens.

Member of the editorial boards of the following local history serial publications on the territory of the Cherkasy region: “The devotees of local history of the Cherkasy region”; “Cherkasy in the context of the history of Ukraine”; “Local history of Cherkasy”; Chyhyryn region in the history of Ukraine.

The main range of scientific interests is the agrarian history of Ukraine, historical local history, ethnology, personal studies.

Author (co-author) of about 400 scientific papers, including 2 textbooks, 13 monographs, 27 popular science books.
