Ukrainian historian and public figure. First Deputy Chairman of the Cherkasy Regional Organization of the National Union of Local Lore Researchers of Ukraine, Professor of the Department of Archeology and Special Areas of Historical Science of the Cherkasy National University named after Bohdan Khmelnytskyi. Honored Worker of Culture of Ukraine (2019). Laureate of the Dmytro Yavornytskyi Prize, member of the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine. Member of the Presidium of the National Union of Local Lore Researchers of Ukraine. Honorary local historian of Ukraine (2013)
The range of scientific interests of Professor Melnychenko is historical geography, economic and regional history, historical local history, Shevchenko studies. These, as well as topical problems of national-patriotic education, the preservation of historical and cultural heritage and museum work, are covered by him in about 300 scientific and educational works. In 2011-2016 was a member of the Scientific and Methodological Council on Education of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, in 2006-2014. – specialized academic council for the defense of candidate dissertations in the specialties “History of Ukraine” and “Historiography, source studies and special historical disciplines”The Bohdan Khmelnytskyi National University of Cherkasy. He was a member of the academic council of the university (2007-2013), was elected chairman of the conference of the university labor collective (2007-2009). Among the educational and methodological developments of Professor Melnychenko is the textbook “Historical Local History” (2003), “My Cherkasy Region. The history of the native land from ancient times to the present” (2006), “Historical geography of Ukraine” (2012), “Cherkasy during the Ukrainian revolution of 1917-1921” (2016), a number of educational and methodological materials for students of history and teachers and students of secondary schools. Co-author of the textbook “Fundamentals of Local History” (2016) for higher educational institutions, member of the author teams of scientific publications “Ukrainian Cossacks: Small Encyclopedia” (2002) and “Ukraine of Taras Shevchenko” (2014). Author of scientific and popular science books on local lore subjects “Local History of Cherkasy Region: Pages of History” (2010), “Shevchenko of Cherkasy Region” (2013), “Cherkasy Region is an Ancient, Generous and Holy Land” (2018), a chronological guide “This Day in the History of Cherkasy Region” “(2017). Head of the team of authors of the book “Travels in Ukraine. Golden horseshoe of Cherkasy region. Co-author of the books “Shevchenko and Cherkasy” (1999), “With a kobzar in the heart” (2013), “Sights of Cherkasy” (1998), “50 song years” (about Cherkasy Academic Honored Ukrainian folk choir) (2007). He devotes a lot of time to editorial work. In 1993-2000 edited the newspaper “Cherkasy Pedagogical” (“Cherkasy University”).
In December 1989, he was one of the initiators of the founding conference of the regional local history society, which, after the formation of the All-Ukrainian Union of Local Historians (now National Union of Local Lore Researchers of Ukraine) in 1990, became its regional organization. Since 1989 he has been a member of the board, since 1996 he has been a deputy chairman, and from 2001 to 2021 he has been a chairman of the Cherkasy regional organization of the National Union of Local Lore Researchers of Ukraine. In 1996, Vasyl Melnichenko was elected a member of the board, and in 2012, a member of the Presidium of the National Union of Local Lore Researchers of Ukraine. He is a delegate to the II-VI Congresses of the Union. He headed the competition committee for the award of the Mykhailo Maksymovych regional local history prize. He was the chairman of the council for culture and spirituality under the regional state administration (2005-2010), participated in the development of the State program “Golden Horseshoe of Cherkasy” for 2006-2009. and the Regional Development Strategy of the Cherkasy region for the period up to 2020, the formation of museum expositions in the region. He actively participates in the work of the advisory and advisory bodies of the regional state administration – the council on cultural issues, the expert council on book publishing, the commission on personal scholarships for workers of culture and art, the organizing committee for the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Ukrainian Revolution of 1917-1921. On December 22, 2021, he was elected First Deputy Chairman of the Cherkasy Regional Organization of the National Union of Local Lore Researchers of Ukraine.
