Historical excursion
In 1581, Yahilnytsia passed into the possession of the Lyantskoronskys. On the site of the old castle, Stanislav Lyantskoronsky in 1630 built a new one – a stone one, which was considered one of the strongest in Western Podillia.
The troops of Hetman Khmelnytskyi failed to take the castle in 1648. In 1655, the Russian army and Ukrainian Cossack regiments conquered the castle. The garrison of 200 surrendered. Among the various trophies that the winners received were 87 guns.
According to the Buchach peace treaty of 1672, Yahilnytsia became part of the Ottoman Porte. Constant Polish-Turkish skirmishes continued until 1683 and led to the decline of the town.
As a result of the first partition of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, Galicia came under the rule of the Habsburgs. A member of the Galician Seim, Maciej Lyantskoronsky already in 1783 received the title of count from Emperor Joseph II. Under these conditions, the Lyantskoronskys live in Lviv or in the capital, and in 1817 the residence, which had long been empty, was sold to the government. Since that time, the palace has been converted into a tobacco dryer. In 1844, a factory for the production of potash was also built on the territory of the castle. This enterprise worked until the beginning of the First World War. The tobacco factory operated until the early 1990s, when it went bankrupt. Now the object belongs to the Chernivtsi firm “Atlas”.
The modern Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary was built in the Baroque style at the expense of the Lyantskoronsky family and consecrated in 1842. In 1899 the temple was restored. In the interwar period, the parish numbered more than 4 thousand believers and covered several neighboring villages. On the pediment of the temple there is a huge count coat of arms of the Lyantskoronskys. During the Soviet period, the church had a gym, and then a warehouse. Now the current temple belongs to the parish of Chortkiv as part of the Lviv diocese. They are cared for by Dominican fathers.
