Historical excursion
Yazlovets Castle is one of the oldest feudal castles in Podillia. It is located in the meander of the Olkhovets River on a cape-like rise below the level of the Podilskyi plateau. To the north of the castle at the foot of the hill was a city surrounded by a defensive wall. The walls of the castle are built of local sandstone of different shades. Finishing elements are made of white limestone.
Yazlovets Castle consists of two parts: the upper castle was built in the highest and narrowest place of the cape and the lower castle is located to the west and was later rebuilt into a palace.
The first fortifications in Yazlovets could have existed even under the Koriatovichs. The oldest donjon tower may have been built before 1379. The first written mention of the castle dates back to 1436 and is associated with Teodoryk Buchatskyi. The same document mentions the garden, more precisely, the allocation of funds to the local church of Mary Magdalene to create a garden between the church and the castle hill. At this stage, the castle had the shape of an elongated pentagon with a square tower on the west and a moat that cut the promontory from the floor side.
In the middle of the XV century a new cub has been attached to the castle on the east side. The moat became the foundation and cellars for the new Gothic house. In the second half of the XVI century. under Yurii Yazlovetskyi, the castle was rebuilt in the Renaissance style. On the southwestern side, a powerful 5-tier entrance tower was completed, two tiers of which are located below the level of the gate. Yurii Yazlovetskyi was a great crown hetman, and the castle in Yazlovka was his residence.
During Turkish rule, Yazlovets became the center of the sanjak (1676 – 1684). At this time, new gardens were planted on all the city hills, which were later looked after as gardens of the city community.
In the middle of the XVII century. under the Koniecpolskys, a defensive belt of the lower castle was built. The western part of these fortifications in the XVII century. the subsequent owners of the Poniatowskis rebuilt it into a palace, next to which there was a small park. It was also preserved under the Blazhevsky barons. After 1862, Marcelina Darovska planted and organized the monastery park within its present borders. In addition to the decorative part of the park, a plot of the garden, a vineyard and a greenhouse were laid at that time.
