In Kyiv, authorities want to establish National Memorial Military Cemetery on Lysa Gora, but activists of the "Ukrainian Environmental Protection Group" opposed construction on the protected territory.

The authorities of the capital posted the draft decision on the website of the city council on October 3. They plan to allocate about 5 million hryvnias and give 140 hectares of land for development. However, eco-activists emphasize the illegality of the decision, because construction and any other activity that can harm the natural complex, it is prohibited on the territory of the nature reserve fund.

The fact is that there are more than 30 plants and animals listed in the Red Book on the territory of the Lysa Gora RLP. In addition, age-old oaks have been preserved in the tract, some of them even have the individual status of a firm assets, nature reserve fund.

– Part of the territory of Lysa Gora has an exceptional historical value – it is the location of the Lysogora fort (the largest earthen fortification construction in Europe from 1871-1875), it belongs to the “Kyiv Fortress” Museum and its boundaries have been removed in nature. In 1994, the regional landscape park “Bald Mountain” was declared here, ecoactivists emphasize.

On top of that, in order to honor the memory of the fallen soldiers, it is proposed to choose a territory of mainly flat area, in order to prevent the risks of landslides and the destruction of the memorial complex. Secondly, the place for the memorial should be located within the transport accessibility for all those willing to honor the memory of the heroes.

Activists have already appealed to President Volodymyr Zelenskyi and the Prosecutor General’s Office with a request to cancel this decision.
