The construction of a new residential complex can destroy it forever.
At Voznesensky Uzviz, 25 in the historic center of Kyiv, an ancient cave was discovered next to an abandoned house, which may disappear due to construction. This was reported by Dmytro Perov, an expert of the Center for Urban Development.
According to scientists, the cave complex, the age of which is approximately equal to the age of Kyivan Rus, is similar in configuration to the Varyazka and Smorodynova caves, and images of animals were also discovered there.
“Among the winding labyrinths of the ancient cave structure, we found animistic images of animals and graffiti of the later “Varyaz” period. The rune Algiz (“chicken foot”), the features of which can be seen on one of the walls of the complex, was used by the ancient Varangians as a symbol of protection, a charm, a symbol of life,” Perov said.
According to him, such symbols were applied to the walls of the house and used as a charm.
At the same time, archaeologists emphasize that the cave, together with the remains of the stone structure of 1898, was miraculously preserved, but the construction of a new residential complex may destroy it forever.
“Vitaliy Klitschko intends to hand over the cave complex for the construction of residential complex. As Oleksandr Dyadyuk notes, the historic building here was privatized using forged documents. Now the developer is only waiting for the transfer of the land to start construction here,” Dmytro Perov explained.
